Tennis team topples Tigers
Sparta swept all three doubles matches and added a pair of singles wins Thursday, rolling to a 5-2 victory over Black River Falls in nonconference girls tennis action at Meadowview Middle School.
The Lady Spartans dominated the doubles competition, as all three Sparta teams picked up easy victories.
In No. 1 doubles action, Lady Spartans Holly Larsen and Elsa McPherson toppled the Tiger team of Allison Sipamonghi and MacKenzie Johnson 6-0, 6-3, while Sparta’s No. 2 doubles team of Rajvi Patel and Grace Hellman picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Black River Falls duo of Lois WhiteEagle and Kathy Hernandez-White.
Sparta’s No. 3 doubles team of Esperanza Hedrick and Krystal Lieder picked up a forfeit to complete the sweep for the Lady Spartans.
In singles action, Lady Spartan netter Gabrielle Nemec handed Tiger Keoinia Dobson a 6-2, 6-1 loss at No. 2, while Sparta’s Shannon Goede earned a forfeit at No. 4.
In other singles play, Sparta’s Kira Schaitel was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Jenna Briggs of Black River Falls at No. 1 and Lady Spartan Jordan Green fell 6-0, 6-1 to Tiger Chayla Dobsen at No. 2.
The victory – the fourth of the season for the Lady Spartan netters - snapped a three-match losing skid.
The Lady Spartans got back in action this (Monday) morning, when they hit the road for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to compete in the 2015 Mississippi Valley Conference Championships.
Next Monday, Sparta travels to Tomah for the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association sub-sectional.
If any Spartans advance from the sub-sectional, they will travel to Madison Memorial High School on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to compete in the WIAA sectional for a chance to advance to state.
