Tennis team falls to Luther
by JOHN PAUL SCHALLER
When the dust cleared, the scoreboard showed Onalaska Luther defeating Sparta 7-0, but sometimes the final score doesn’t tell the entire story.
Despite being swept in both the singles and doubles matches, the Lady Spartans turned in a solid effort during Thursday’s nonconference girls tennis match at Sparta Meadowview Middle School.
Lady Spartans Elsa McPherson and Kira Schaitel both played well in their singles matches before falling as the result of tiebreakers.
In No. 1 singles action, Luther’s Anna Dobbe scored a 6-3 victory over McPherson in the first set, but McPherson rallied to even the score with a 7-5 win in the second set before falling 10-6 in a super tiebreaker.
In the No. 2 singles match, Luther’s Taler Garves jumped out to an early lead with a 7-6 victory over Schaitel, but Schaitel rallied with a 7-5 victory in the second set to even the score.
Both sets were settled as the results of a tiebreaker, before Garves captured the match with a 12-10 win in the super tiebreaker.
In other singles action, Sparta’s Jordan Green suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Luther’s Clare Schultz at No, 3 and Lady Spartan Shannon Goede was blanked 6-0, 6-0 by Luther’s Julia Hoff at No. 4,
In doubles action, the Lady Spartan tandem of Krystal Lieder and Holly Larsen fell 6-0, 6-2 to Carlena Yang and Anna Hemmelman at No. 1, Spartans Esperanza Hedrick and Armalyn Hedrick were defeated 6-1, 6-2 by the Luther duo of Ella Loersch and Amanda Moldenhauer at No. 2 and the Sparta team of Rajvi Patel and Grace Hellman suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Knights Maria Cox and Keely Paus at No. 3.
The Lady Spartan netters are back in action today (Tuesday), when they travel to Holmen to battle the Vikings in a 4:30 p.m. Mississippi Valley Conference match.
