Strikers earn tie, suffer loss in pair of MVC matches
The Sparta boys soccer team earned a tie and suffered a loss in a pair of Mississippi Valley Conference road matches earlier this week.
The Spartan strikers battled La Crosse Logan to a 1-1 deadlock in a Monday match that was postponed due to inclement weather earlier this season.
A day later, Sparta suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of league-leading Onalaska.
Sparta 1, Logan 1
A late Ranger goal allowed Logan to escape with a tie in a MVC match at Field for ids in La Crosse.
Both teams failed to score in the opening half of play, but Sparta managed to forge a narrow lead when Matthew Pauley scored an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute to put the Sparta strikers on top 1-0.
Juts over 20 minutes later, Logan’s Eli Szymanski scored off an assist from teammate Mark Schultz to knot the score at 1-1.
Both teams went scoreless down the stretch and settled for a tie.
Daniel Gonzalez finished with four saves in the net for the Spartan strikers, while Logan’s Theo Carr recorded seven saves.
Sparta 0, Onalaska 3
Two second-half goals broke open a close game and allowed the Hilltoppers top remain unbeaten atop the MVC standings.
Onalaska opened up a 1-0 lead when Mitchel Schaller scored in the opening half.
Schaller put the game away in the second half, scoring back-to-back goals to complete a hat trick and give Onalaska a 3-0 advantage.
Sparta fell to 2-4-2 in MVC action with the loss, while Onalaska remains unbeaten with a perfect 8-0 record.
The Spartan strikers are back in action this (Thursday) afternoon, when they host cross-county rival Tomah in a 4 p.m. MVC match at Sparta High School.
