Spikers suffer MVC loss to Hilltoppers
Sparta struggled from the get-go Tuesday, dropping three straight sets in a 3-0 loss to Onalaska in Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball action at Alton Ask Gymnasium.
The loss was the second straight for the Lady Spartan strikers, who defeated the Hilltoppers 3-2 when they two teams met in Onalaska on Sept. 1.
The Hilltoppers jumped out to an early lead, outlasting Sparta 25-18 in the opening set of the best-of-five match.
Onalaska came out strong in the second set, scoring 14 straight points to break an early 1-1 deadlock and open up a 15-1 advantage.
The Hilltoppers went on to score an easy 25-12 victory in the second set, increasing its advantage to 2-0.
The third and decisive set mirrored the first, as Onalaska built an early lead and slowly pulled away from the Lady Spartan spikers to post another 25-18 victory and complete the sweep.
Sophomore Becca Jenkins recorded five kills to lead the Lady Spartans at the net, while senior Coral Jones and junior Lexi Gilbertson finished with four apiece and senior Madi Blaha added three.
On the defensive set of the net, Blaha led the way for Sparta with 11 digs, followed by Warren with nine, senior Jackie Page and junior Sara VanKirk with eight apiece and Gilbertson with six.
Page also recorded 16 assists for the Lady Spartan spikers.
Emma Gamoke led the Hilltoppers with 13 kills, while Sam Schneider recorded 31 assists and Kate Dabrowski finished with 17 digs for Onalaska.
Sparta fell to 3-5 in MVC action and 9-9 overall with the loss, while the Hilltoppers improved to 4-5 in league play and 13-15 overall.
The Lady Spartan spikers are back in action tonight (Thursday), when they host cross-county rival Tomah in a 7 p.m. MVC match at Alton Ask Gymnasium.
The Timberwolves handed Sparta a 3-1 loss when the two teams met in Tomah on Sept. 3.
