Spartan harriers finish third at Black River Falls
The Spartan harriers continued to show they are among the top cross country teams in the area Tuesday, turning in stellar performances at the Black River Falls Invitational.
Both the Sparta boys and girls teams ran to a third-place finish in the 13-team invite at Skyline Golf Course.
A pair of Lady Spartan freshmen finished the top ten to lead Sparta to a third-place finish.
Taylor Winterton continued to lead the Sparta girls team with a second-place finish in the 115-runner field.
Winterton finished the 5,000-meter course in 20:15.41, coming in just under eight seconds behind Mauston junior Gabi Lee, who won the race in 20:07.8.
Angie Talsky captured eighth for the Lady Spartan harriers finishing the course at Skyline in 21:08.43.
Senior Devyn Kenworthy turned in a stellar effort as well, finishing the race in 21:46.52 to capture 16th place, while junior Aly Laufenberg turned in a time of 22:19.29 to land in 22nd for Sparta.
Freshman Hailey Parkinson rounded out Sparta’s top five scorers when she finished in 58th place with a time of 25:10.3.
Sophomore Sarah Anderson finished in 70th place with a time of 25:54.68 for the Lady Spartans, while freshman Bailey Pierce turned in a time of 28:03.54 to finish in 82nd place.
West Salem won the girls race with 48 team tallies, while Mauston finished with 65 points in the runner-up slot.
Third place went to the Lady Spartan harriers with a team score of 100, followed by Wisconsin Dells in fourth with 119 points and Ellsworth in fifth place with 165 points.
Junior Max Engh continued his string of top-five finishes, capturing third place with a time of 17:04.06 on the 5,000-meter course.
Engh has placed in the top five in his past four meets and has finished no lower than sixth place in all six of Sparta’s cross country meets, after opening the season with a second-place finish at the West Salem Early Bird Invitational Aug. 28.
The Sparta boys packed it in after Engh, as a trio of Spartan harriers claimed the 19 through 21st spots.
Junior Sam Forbes turned in a time of 18:24.14 to capture 19th for Sparta, while freshman Nick Stritchko and junior Kole Nelson came in 20th and 21st, respectively, with times of 18:24.94 and 18:25.74.
Senior Trygve Zurfluh rounded out Sparta’s top five runners, when he finished 31st in 18:40.93.
Junior Christian Lamon added a 36th-place finish for Sparta in 18:50.11, while sophomore Mathias Krein turned in a time of 19:31.79 to finish 55th overall in the field of 136 runners.
Mauston won the boys race with 67 team tallies, while West Salem finished in second with a score of 86.
Third place went to Sparta with 90 points, followed by Altoona in fourth with 100 points and Nekoosa-Port Edwards with 122 team tallies in fifth.
The Spartan harriers will be back in action Saturday, when they travel to Wisconsin Rapids to compete in a large invitational which begins at 10:30 a.m. at The Ridges Golf Course – the site of the 2015 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state cross country championships.
