Sparta fastpitch team sweeps Lady Timberwolves

Sparta put together 17 hits in two games to capture a doubleheader sweep of cross-county rival Tomah in summer league softball action at Sparta Memorial Park last week.
The Lady Spartan nine outlasted the Tomah Stix 7-3 in the opener and brought out the big bats en route to a 16-0 victory over Tomah in the nightcap.

Sparta scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to break open a close game and capture a win in the first of two five-inning battles.
Tomah drew first blood in the top of the first, when Charli Schueler ignited a rally with a lead-off single and Sam Shamhart followed two outs later with a RBI double to give the Stix an early 1-0 lead.
Sparta answered in its half of the first with a three-run outburst of its own.
Cora Johnson came through with a lead-off triple and Madasen Lund followed with a base-on-balls to put Sparta runners on first and third.
Erika Scholle and Alecia Kirchhoff followed with singles that helped the Lady Spartans pull in front 3-1.
In the bottom of the second, Sommer Moen’s groundout to second plated Myah Kenyon from third to extend the Sparta advantage to 4-1.
Tomah answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third, when Jenny Lane singled and scored one out later on Alyssa Whaley’s RBI single and Zoey Ludeking followed with a RBI double to right centerfield to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Lady Spartan nine broke it open in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs to take the lead for good at 7-3.
Lund drew a lead-off walk, Hannah Schmitz singled to put runners on first and second and Rorie Marx belted a RBI double to left center to ignite the Sparta rally, while Scholle and Kirchhoff came through with back-to-back run-scoring singles to give Sparta a four-run cushion.
Kirchhoff allowed just one Tomah hit over the final two innings to secure the win for the Lady Spartan nine.
Marx went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI to lead Sparta and Johnson was 2-for-3 with a triple, while Schmitz, Scholle and Kirchhoff added two singles apiece and Kenyon finished with a single.
Ludeking went 1-for-2 with a double to lead Tomah, while Schueler, Whaley, Lane, Brenna Taylor, Kellee Eckleberg, Amanda Lowry and Emma Van Treese each finished with a single.

Ally Cerda-Reyes tossed a two hitter and Sparta pounded out a dozen hits in a lopsided win over the Stix in the nightcap.
Sparta took control early, striking for eight runs in the top of the first to open up a big early lead.
Marx and Kirchhoff had two-run singles and Alexis Steinhoff added a two-run double to help Sparta jump out to an 8-0 lead in their first at-bat of the game.
Cerda-Reyes ignited another Lady Spartan outburst in the top of the second with a one-out double, before Laney Schell came through with a two-run double and Kenyon followed with a two-run single to increase the Lady Spartan advantage to 12-0.
Sparta added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth and pushed across two more in the fifth to forge a 16-0 cushion.
Cerda-Reyes went the distance on the mound to earn the win for Sparta.
Johnson went 4-for-4 with a double and one RBI to lead Sparta at the plate and Schell, Cerda-Reyes and Steinhoff each had a double and two RBI, while Lund, Marx, Scholle, Kirchhoff and Kenyon added a single apiece.
Ludeking’s single in the third and Jaylin Rezin single in the fourth were the only two hits for the Stix.
