Soccer team suffers 2-1 loss at Central
A pair of early first-half goals lifted Central to a 2-1 victory over Sparta in Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer action at Field for Kids in La Crosse Tuesday night.
Aarom Brum got things started for Central, scoring off an assist by Austin Helgerson to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 advantage.
Near the midway point in the half, Helgerson recorded another assist - this time on a goal by Cade Garzee that led to a 2-0 halftime lead for Central.
The Spartans only goal in the game came in the second half on a penalty kick by sophomore Turner Sund after he was taken down in the box by a Red Raider player.
Brenon Burkhardt finished with five saves in the net for the Spartan strikers, while Red Raider goalie Jacob Litman stopped five shots on goal as well.
Sparta fell 3-5-2 in MVC action with the loss, while Central – which has won seven of its last nine games – improved to 5-2-1 in league play.
The Spartan strikers are back in action this (Thursday) afternoon, when they host Holmen in a 4 p.m. MVC match at Sparta High School.
