Royall spikers fall short in bid for state volleyball berth
Royall came up just short in its bid for a berth in the state volleyball tournament.
The Scenic Bluffs Conference champion Panthers suffered a 3-1 loss to Southwestern in Saturday’s Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 4 sectional finals at Onalaska Luther High School.
Royall advanced to Saturday’s championship match with a 3-0 victory over Augusta in Thursday’s Division 4 sectional semifinal match at La Crosse Logan.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead with a 25-18 victory over the Beavers in the first set of the best-of-five match, then moved in front 2-0 with a 25-19 win in the second set.
Royall put the match away in a sweep, outlasting Augusta 25-22 in the third set to advance to Saturday’s sectional final against Southwestern.

The Wildcats broke open a close match with back-to-back wins to end Royall’s hopes of a trip to state.
Southwestern opened up a 1-0 lead with a narrow 26-24 victory over the Panthers in the opening set.
Royall bounced back, evening the score at 1-1 with a 25-23 victory in the second set of the best-of-five match.
The Wildcats regained the lead at 2-1 with a 25-22 win in the third set and put the match away with a 25-16 victory over the Panthers in the fourth and decisive set.
The Panthers finished their season with a 32-6 overall record and went 13-1 to capture the 2015 Scenic Bluffs Conference championship.
Three other area volleyball teams were eliminated in Thursday’s sectional semifinals.
In Division 2 action at Stevens Point, West Salem suffered a 3-1 loss to Merrill.
The Panthers, who defeated Sparta 3-2 in regional semifinal action Oct. 22, jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-20 defeat of the Bluejays.
Merrill battled back to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-14 win in the second set, then took a 2-1 advantage with a 25-20 win in the third set.
The Bluejays made it three straight with a 25-22 win in the fourth in decisive set.
In Division 1 action at Baraboo, Mississippi Valley Conference champion Holmen fell 3-1 to Sun Prairie.
The Vikings jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-18 victory over the Cardinals in the first set, before Sun Prairie evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 win in the second set.
Sun Prairie continued to roll after that, scoring a 25-17 win in the third set and a 25-22 victory in the fourth to capture the match.
In Division 3 action at Cochrane-Fountain City, La Crosse Aquinas was swept from post-season play Eau Claire Regis.
The Ramblers opened with a 25-16 win in the first set, moved in front 2-0 with a 25-21 victory in the second set and captured the match with a 25-18 win in the third set.
