Three of Lady Spartan tennis players are the first to earn Spartan Athlete of the Week honors for the 2015-16 school year.
Junior Elsa McPherson, Sparta’s No. 1 singles player, earned the honor for taking first place in Sparta’s first triangular of the season last month.
The daughter of Steve and Rachel McPherson of Sparta, Elsa opened her season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Viroqua’s Taiga Boisvert to lift Sparta to a 6-1 victory over the Blackhawks in the Aug, 21 triangular at Meadowview Middle School.
Elsa followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Izzy Zahn of Whitewater, scoring Sparta’s only point in a 6-1 loss.
Sparta varsity tennis coach Brooke Boisvert said Elsa put in many hours of hard work during the off-season to improve her game.
She is in her third season on the tennis team and was named to the all-Mississippi Valley Conference honorable mention team last season.
Elsa also played basketball for the Lady Spartans last season.
Lady Spartan sophomores Grace Hellman and Rajvi Patel also earned Spartan Athlete of the Week honors.
Hellman and Patel make up Sparta’s No. 2 doubles team, opening the season with a slid 4-1 mark.
The duo won three matches in a row for the Lady Spartan netters recently.
Grace is the daughter of Jim and Allison Hellman of Sparta, while Rajvi is the daughter of Firish and Pravina Patel of Sparta.
Last year, both girls participated in winter guard and girls soccer, and both earned varsity letters as freshmen on the girls tennis team.
