Nemec, Hedrick fourth at MVC tennis tourney
Lady Spartans Gabrielle Nemec and Esperanza Hedrick won one of three matches to place fourth in No. 3 doubles at Monday’s Mississippi Valley Conference girls tennis championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Nemec and Hedrick opened the tourney with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory over Tracy Smith and Jennifer Peterson of La Crosse Logan, before suffering a 6-2, 6-2 loss at the hands of Marissa Delaney and Tayla Stuttly of Onalaska in the second round.
The defeat landed Nemec and Hedrick in a battle for third place, but the Lady Spartans had to settle for fourth after falling to 6-2, 6-1 to Jenalee Emmert and Elena Ruff of La Crosse Aquinas.
In other doubles action, the Sparta duo of Holly Larsen and Krystal Lieder dropped its opening round match at No. 1, but managed to rebound for a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the Tomah tandem of Jadyn Heinz and Haley Bradley in round robin play, while Lady Spartans Grace Hellman and Rajvi Patel fell in the first round, but rebounded to score an 8-4 victory over Seallena Moser and Charlene Chang of Tomah in the No. 2 round robin matches.
Jordan Green was the only Lady Spartan netter to earn a singles victory.
After dropping her opening round match, Green blanked Kirsten Olson of Aquinas 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3
Sparta singles players Elsa McPherson, Kira Schaitel and Shannon Goede suffered losses in three straight matches.
Sparta finished its MVC season in seventh place in the 2015 standings with five points.
Central won the MVC title with 75 points, followed by Onalaska in second with 72, Aquinas in third with 36, Logan in fourth with 31, Tomah in fifth with 22 and Holmen with 19 points in sixth place.
The Lady Spartans are back in action Monday, when they travel to Tomah to compete in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association sub-sectional.
