Jayvee football team tops Central
Sawyer Brown scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the second half to help Sparta erase a 6-0 deficit and defeat La Crosse Central 8-6 in junior varsity football action at Memorial Field Monday.
Both teams started slow, as the first half ended in a scoreless tie.
The Red Raiders drew first blood, scoring on a 13-yard run late in the third quarter.
Central missed the extra point, but still held a 6-0 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, Sparta’s Zachary Sears intercepted a Red Raider pass and returned it 11 yards to the Central 25-yard line.
Five plays later, Brown hit paydirt to knot the score at 6-6 and Jaden Winchel tacked on the two-point conversion to give Sparta the lead for good at 8-6.
During the Spartan scoring drive, Winchel carried the ball three time for 12 yards, Brown had two carries for six yards and Greg Jacobs had a big seven-yard run on first down to set up the Sparta score.
The Spartan defense held the Red Raiders to just one first down after that, helping Sparta seal the Mississippi Valley Conference victory.
The Spartan junior varsity team is back in action Monday, when it travels to Onalaska for a 5 p.m. MVC game with the Hilltoppers.
