Harriers hot at Holmen Invitational
Eight Spartan harriers turned in season-best performances Tuesday, leading the Sparta boys and girls cross country teams to stellar finished at the Holmen Invitational.
The Sparta boys captured second place at the 12-team invitational, while the Lady Spartan harriers finished third out of 10 teams at Holmen.
Junior Max Engh finished third in a field of 148 runners to lead Sparta to the runner-up spot.
Engh turned in a season-best time of 17:33.6 on the 5,000 meter course.
Junior Sam Forbes was solid as well, finishing the race in 18:47.9 to capture 15th place, while junior Caleb Pokorny was right behind in 18th place with a time of 18:59.3.
Freshman Nick Stritchko and senior Trygve Zurfluh finished 20th and 21st, respectively, with times of 19:04.3 and 19:04.9 to round out Sparta’s scorers in the race.
Junior Kole Nelson added a 26th-place finish in 19:12.6 and sophomore Mathias Krein finished in 20:02.3 to earn 50th.
In addition to Engh, Spartans Stritchko, Zurfluh and Krein turned in season-best times.
Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau captured the team title with 68 points, while Sparta landed in second with a team score of 77.
Third place went to host Holmen with 78 points, followed by Viroqua in fourth with 83 and La Crosse Central with 94 in fifth.
Freshman Taylor Winterton finished seventh overall in 21:04.8 to lead the Lady Spartan harriers to a third-place finish.
Senior Devyn Kenworthy captured 15th for the Lady Spartans with a time of 21:59.3 on the 5,000-meter course, while freshman Angie Talsky was right behind in 16th in 22:19.0.
Sophomore Kari O’Rourke and junior Aly Laufenberg rounded out Sparta’s top five in 27th and 28th place, respectively, with times of 23:09.0 and 23:13.4.
Freshman Halley Parkinson finished 67th for Sparta in 26:13.4 and freshman Bailey Pierce turned in a time of 26:24.9 in 71st.
Winterton, Kenworthy, Talsky and O’Rourke are finished with season-best times for the Lady Spartans.
La Crosse Central won the team title with 34 points, while second place went to host Holmen with 76.
Third place went to Sparta with a team score of 89, followed by Viroqua in fourth with 115 and Brookwood with 133 points in fifth.
The Spartan cross country teams are back in action on Thursday, Oct. 1, when they travel to La Crosse for a large invitational at Forest Hills Golf Course at 3:45 p.m.
