Golfers finish fourth in MVC race
Fourth place in its last two Mississippi Valley Conference matches led t fourth place in the finals league standings for the Sparta girls golf team this week.
The Lady Spartan linksters finished fourth in a nine-hole match at Hiawatha Golf Club in Tomah Monday and added a fourth-place finish in Wednesday’s MVC Championships at Trempealeau Mountain Golf Course.

Senior Becca Yahnke fired an eight-over-par round of 44 to lead Sparta on the par-36 layout at Hiawatha.
Senior Laney Sullivan and junior Delaney Schaller were solid for the Lady Spartans as well, as both recorded nine-hole totals of 49 – a career low for Schaller.
Sophomore Ginny Yahnke finished with a nine-hole score of 53 for Sparta, while senior Kayla VonRuden – the newest addition to the Lady Spartan golf squad – finished with a 62 in her first match of the season.
Yahnke finished tied for sixth place in the individual standings, while Sullivan and Schaller were tied for 17th overall.
Onalaska won the team title with 165 strokes, while Tomah finished in second with a 178.
Third place went to La Crosse Aquinas with a team score of 190, followed by Sparta just five strokes back in fourth with a 195.
La Crosse Logan-Central finished in fifth place with a score of 236, followed by Holmen in sixth with an incomplete score.
Becca Yahnke led the way again, this time with an 18-hole total of 91 on the par-71 layout at Trempealeau Mountain.
She fired 45 on the front nine and a 46 on the back nine to pace the Lady Spartans linksters for the second straight match.
Ginny Yahnke recorded a 46 on the front and a 49 on the back to fire an 18-hole score of 95, while Sullivan was right behind with a 101 after carding a 49 on the front and a 52 on the back.
VonRuden shot 59 on the front and 65 on the back to record a 124 for Sparta, while Schaller had nine-hole rounds of 68 and 69 to finish at 137.
Onalaska win the tournament with 357, followed by Tomah in second at 374, Aquinas in third at 387, Sparta in fourth at 411, La Crosse in fifth at 464 and Holmen in sixth with an incomplete score.
Onalaska won the 2015 MVC title with 90 team points, while defending champion Tomah settled for the runner-up spot with 73 points.
Third place went to Aquinas with 60 points and Sparta finished in fourth – one place better that last year – with 47 team tallies.
Fifth place went to La Crosse with 30 points in the final standings, followed by Holmen in sixth with 15 points.
The Lady Spartan linksters are back in action Wednesday, when they travel to Stevens Point to compete in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 regional at Stevens Point Country Club at 9 a.m.
