Blugolds take three straight from spiders
Despite coming off a big win at La Crosse Logan last week, the Lady Spartan spikers struggled from the start Tuesday, falling 3-0 to La Crosse Aquinas in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match at Alton Ask Gymnasium.
Sparta never really got on track in the conference match, as the Blugolds took an early lead and never let up.
Aquinas handed the Lady Spartan spikers a 25-17 loss in the opening set of the best-of-five match, then went ahead 2-0 with a 25-16 victory in the second set.
It was downhill from there for Sparta, as the Blugolds completed the sweep with a 25-9 defeat of the Lady Spartans in the third and decisive set.
Seniors Coral Jones and Madi Blaha led Sparta on offense with five kills apiece, while senior Lexi Gilbertson and sophomore Becca Jenkins recorded four kills each.
On the defensive end of the net, Blaha led the Lady Spartan spikers with nine digs, while senior Jackie Page and junior Kaitlin Warren finished with seven and five digs, respectively,
Gilbertson and Jenkins each recorded four digs, while Jones and sophomore Marissa Erickson finished with three each.
As a team, Sparta recorded 39 digs in three sets.
Page added 19 assists for the Lady Spartans, who fell to 3-4 in MVC action and 9-8 overall with the loss.
Aquinas improved its league mark to 6-1 and is currently tied with Holmen for the top spot in the MVC standings.
The Lady Spartan spikers have a week off before they are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 29, when they travel to Onalaska for a 7 p.m. MVC match with the Hilltoppers.
