Town of Tomah couple loses everything in house fire
A Town of Tomah couple, whose house was destroyed in a fire last Monday, were unable to save anything.
According to Oakdale Fire Chief Bob Gnewikow, Sherry Kuehl, who reported the fire at the home she shares with her husband, Vaughn, was able to escape the blaze, but they lost two dogs and three cats.
“They lost everything but the clothes on their backs,” said Gnewikow.
The fire was reported at 2:24 p.m. but it didn’t take long for flames to spread throughout the old farm house.
“We were on the scene in less than 15 minutes and it was already fully involved,” said Gnewikow.
Firefighters battled the blaze until 8:30 p.m. and were called back at midnight when the ruins reignited. They remained the second time until 3 a.m.
Gnewikow said he finally had Gerke Excavation use heavy equipment to level the house for safety reasons. He said the cause of the fire remains undetermined.
Other than the animals, there were no injuries. The Red Cross is assisting the Kuehls.
Ft. McCoy Fire Department, Oakdale First responders, Tomah Ambulance Service, City of Tomah, and the Tomah Fire Department also provided assistance.
