Sparta park board looks into parking lot congestion at community center
The park board weighed options dealing with a congested parking lot at the Sparta/Barney Family Community Center Building during its meeting this week.
The community center, 1000 E. Montgomery St., houses the parks and recreation office, the Boys & Girls Club and the senior nutrition site.
The lot gets congested between 4-6 p.m. when parents are picking up Boys & Girls Club members and parks and rec programs begin.
However, much of the snafu is caused by parents who park parallel to the building instead of parking in a space and either run in to retrieve children or wait for children to emerge, noted board member Carlos Holcomb.
He said it’s difficult to navigate the parking lot when cars are idling in the middle of the driving area, and it also creates a danger for emerging children whose walkway is blocked by the cars.
The board discussed options and settled on painting the words “no stopping” on the blacktop in the spring.
City employees also will speak with club staff to help get the word out to parents that they should be utilizing the available parking spaces.
