Schmitz appointed to school board
Bambi Schmitz was appointed to the Sparta School Board Tuesday night.
Schmitz works for Union National Bank in Sparta and has two children currently in the school district.
She said she decided to apply for the vacancy because she wanted be a part of the decision-making process regarding the education of district children. She indicated people with ideas and opinions should not sit on the sidelines while others make decisions, but should have the courage to voice their ideas and be a part of making changes.
Schmitz, and her husband, Jason, grew up in Sparta. Just before her senior year, the former Bambi Bower, moved with her family to Gilman, where she graduated in 1998. The couple decided to raise their family here.
Schmitz and former board member David Eitland were the only two to apply for the vacancy that will be created at the end of December when Todd Mandel’s resignation takes effect. Eitland subsequently withdrew his name.
Superintendent John Hendricks said Eitland is a member of the SAILS governing board whose longtime president, Aaron Brooks, recently resigned. Eitland indicated he did not want to leave the governing board during the transition.
If she chooses to seek election, Schmitz, Karen Wall, James Rasmussen and Susan Bickford will all be up for election next spring. Of the four seats that will be available, the top two vote-getters would serve three-year terms and the bottom two vote-getters would serve one-year terms.
