Library has new director
The Sparta Free Library Board has hired a new library director.
The board selected Steve Thiry of Kiel. Thiry will begin his post in Sparta on Jan. 11.
Thiry has been the library director of the Chilton Public Library for five years.
Chilton, located in Calumet County on the eastern side of the state, has a population of about 4,000. The Sparta Free Library is a larger facility with more staff.
The board received 20 applications for the position, which became vacant after the abrupt resignation of Peggy Klein in August. Klein had served as director for nearly seven years.
Adult Services Librarian Leah Gentry served as interim director until her departure on Dec. 29. She resigned to be closer to family and will serve as a librarian in Menomonee Falls. 1
The library is accepting applications to replace Gentry. Aimee Schrieber is the youth services librarian.
The board interviewed three people for the job, and Thiry stuck out, indicated library board president Sandie Perry. She said he really clicked with the staff and was very personable.
“He’s very forward-thinking and eager to try new things,” said Perry.
Thiry will bring with him his wife and three children, and is looking forward to immersing himself into the community, according to Perry. She said he likes the area and is anticipating use of the bike trail, a hobby he enjoys.
