Casey’s sells $50K winning lottery ticket
It may not have been the big one, but someone who bought a Powerball ticket from Casey’s General Store in Sparta is $50,000 richer.
Casey’s was one of nine locations in the state where Powerball players won $50,000 in last Saturday’s drawing.
The winning numbers were 16, 19, 32, 34 and 57. The Powerball was 13 and the Power Play number was 3.
Winning tickets also sold in Dane, Menomonie, Burlington, Cedar, Grove, Plymouth, Hudson and Oshkosh.
To win the $50,000 prize, a player has to match four of five numbers plus the Powerball. The chances of that happening are one in 913,130 –better than winning the jackpot, which is one in 292,201,338.
According to lottery officials, 18,315,365 players across the nation won more than $159.1 million in prizes
Jessi Crandell, Casey’s manager, said she and her staff don’t know who bought the winning ticket from their store.
“No one has come in yet,” she said. “I was hoping it was mine, but it wasn’t.”
Crandell said this is the largest winner the store has sold since she’s worked there and she’s just glad it was one of Casey’s customers who won.
She also noted a big uptick in Powerball ticket sales at the store over the past weeks, with one customer purchasing $342 worth at one time. However, she said that person was buying for a group of people who pooled their money together.
Ticket sales nationally shot up the jackpot by more than $49 million last Saturday alone.
Crandell likely won’t see a slowdown in ticket sales for the next few days since, according to officials, the Powerball jackpot for Wednesday night’s drawing is expected to hit at least $1.3 billion. If a winner chooses to take a cash payout, they would receive a one-time lump sum payment of $806 million before taxes.
